Gelcoat Or Paint?

Which One Should I Use On My Boat Restoration!!

Want to repaint a boat. It is gel coat right now. Can I paint over it?; or do I have to re gel coat it?

if i can paint over it, What is good to use and I dont want to spray  the boat?
